Father’s day is not founded through religious tradition in the same way that mother’s day is. It is more of a modern conception and took longer to be adapted to in the UK compared to the USA where the day was conceived. A little history on the holiday reveals that the first Father’s Day was recorded in 1908 but was then skipped until 1910…you’ve got to wonder what happened to 1909! However, it wasn't until WW2 that the Brits began to celebrate the holiday. It was predominantly the influence of American Advertisers who wanted to increase sales and encourage gifts to be sent to troops that led to the gradual adoption of the day. By the end of the War, Father’s day was very much embedded into UK society
In 1972, the President of the USA - Richard Nixon - declared Father’s Day a national holiday and signed it into law as part of his re-election campaign. Unlike Mother’s Day, Fathers Day is celebrated on the same day in the UK and US (as well as the majority of the world's nations which celebrate the holiday) - the third Sunday in June. Some countries, particularly those which are dominated by Roman Catholicism, celebrate Father’s Day on March 19th as this date is the feast of St Joseph - husband to Mary and adoptive father of Jesus - and Father’s Day was more traditionally linked to spiritual fatherhood.
